Excerpt from the girl from the basement.

Harry made short work of the job, apologising that his lady wished to dance. Ambrose didn’t seem to mind, and firmly shook John’s hand, “I can’t tell you how long we have been looking for a man with your sort of expertise. Eve has seen doctors, of course, but, I think she really does need a specialist. Everything Lord Balcom has told us, leads us to believe that you may be just the man we need.”

“I’m more than willing to be of service if I can be, Mr. Morgan. I’m sure that Harry has told you, my specialty is in trauma responses and recovery. I admit, I was quite fascinated to hear Eve’s story. Any case involving amnesia is automatically intriguing to me.”

Ambrose nodded, “Well, that’s interesting.” He drew Sinjen aside, “But I was led to believe that you were rather pragmatic.”

Sinjen chuckled, “That is correct. Whatever the situation is, I’m sure it will be a fascinating study, and I will keep all matters confidential. If, however, I were to later use Eve as a case study, would that be alright? I would use different names, and anything else needed to ensure your family’s privacy.”

The older man nodded, “If it can’t be traced back to us then do as you please.”

Sinjen raised an eyebrow, “But, you do have legitimate concerns?”

“That’s quite right, I do. The girl is quite disturbed. You’ll see. In fact, she should be out very soon. Eve has an obligation to show her face, but she’ll only do that, I expect.”

Within the next three minutes Eve Morgan appeared. Dark blonde, very slim as well as pretty. She would have been beautiful, Sinjen thought, except that she appeared exceptionally pallid and unwell.

He watched her move through the crowd, each step slow, as though it cost her a great deal of strength. She had shadows under her eyes. Sinjen moved over to the rest of the crowd that had formed around her, and received a cold, limp handshake in exchange for his congratulations.

In less than half an hour, her breathing became laboured. He could see her narrow shoulders rise and fall with effort, quickening soon after, as if she was beginning to panic. Eve looked around for a means of escape, and hurried back to the house. It was the fastest he’d seen her move.
